POLA Ginza: Beauty Care, Fine Art, and Cuisine
50 years ago when streetcars still ran through Ginza, passers-by would often stop to admire POLA’s old building. In October 2009, a new one took its place, a culture space with twelve above-ground and two underground floors. With the flagship POLA The Beauty Ginza store, an art gallery, restaurants new to Ginza, and more, the POLA Ginza Building continues to offer fresh, novel surprises in beauty care, fine art, and delicious cuisine.
Design Concepts: Water, Light, and Time
A tower of light that stretches to the sky. The impressive facade has three design concepts: water, light, and time. Water and light make women shine and beautifully change along with time. This is expressed by building’s wall as a whole. This building of light was born out of a collaboration between New York designer Chuck Hoberman and the lighting design master Shozo Toyohisa. It’s the new symbol for POLA, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2009.
Facility Designer
Chuck Hoberman
Born in the USA in 1956. Researches and develops variable structures that apply geometric principles. His toy and building designs can be found in a wide variety of places, moving as if they are alive.
Lighting Designer
Shozo Toyohisa
Born in 1960. Internationally active lighting architect. He has created original lighting tailored for the artworks and spaces of many art museums, including the POLA Museum of Art.
